Measuring the blade span (diameter) of a ceiling fan is actually quite simple. Just follow these steps 👇
✅ Correct Measurement Method
Turn off the power for safety (important!)
Find two opposite fan blades (the two blades that are 180° symmetrical).
Use a tape measure to measure:
From the outermost tip of one blade
Measure in a straight line to the outermost tip of the opposite blade.
This maximum diameter is the blade span of the ceiling fan.
👉 If it’s a 3-blade or 5-blade ceiling fan, measure the straight-line distance between the “two furthest points”.
📏 What if I can’t measure it in one go?
If space is limited, you can calculate it this way:
Measure the length from the center of the ceiling fan to the outermost tip of one blade.
Then multiply by 2 = blade span
📝 Common Ceiling Fan Span Reference
36 inches (≈91 cm): Small rooms
42–48 inches (≈107–122 cm): Bedrooms/Studies
52 inches (≈132 cm): Living rooms/Dining rooms
56 inches and above: Large spaces
How to determine the right ceiling fan size for your room?

🧮 Step 1: Measure the room area
Measure the length × width of the room (in meters), then calculate the area.
Area = Length × Width
🪭 Step 2: Select the ceiling fan blade span based on the area
📐 Ceiling Fan Size Comparison Chart (Practical Version)
| Room area | Recommended blade span |
|---|---|
| ≤10 ㎡ | 36 inch (≈91 cm) |
| 10–15 ㎡ | 42 inch (≈107 cm) |
| 15–20 ㎡ | 48 inch (≈122 cm) |
| 20–30 ㎡ | 52 inch (≈132 cm) |
| ≥30 ㎡ | 56–60 inch or dual ceiling fans |
📏 Step 3:
Confirm the ceiling height (very important)
Ceiling height ≥2.8 m: Generally, no problem
2.6–2.8 m: Choose a short downrod or flush-mount type
≤2.6 m: Strongly recommend a flush-mount ceiling fan or ultra-thin model
👉 The lowest point of the fan blades should be ≥2.3 m from the ground for safety and comfort.
🛋 Step 4:
Consider Furniture and Layout
Ensure there are no obstructions directly below the ceiling fan.
Maintain a distance of ≥50–60 cm from walls or cabinets.
Dining room: The center of the ceiling fan should be aligned with the dining table.
Bedroom: Avoid placing the fan directly above the head of the bed; slightly towards the foot of the bed is more comfortable.
🎯 Quick Calculation Formula
Short side of the room × 2 ≈ Ceiling fan diameter (cm)
Example: Room width 3 m → 300 ÷ 2 ≈ 150 cm (132 cm is the most suitable choice)
